The question of whether AI will take jobs away from millions of people is a complex and controversial topic that has been debated by experts in the field for years. While AI has the potential to disrupt certain industries and eliminate certain jobs, it also has the potential to create new industries and jobs that never existed before.


The Impact of AI on the Labor Market

The impact of AI on the labor market is a multifaceted issue that cannot be generalized. The impact of AI will depend on the industry, the level of automation, the education and skill levels of the workforce, and many other factors. Some jobs that are currently being done by humans may become automated, and this will undoubtedly result in job displacement. According to a report by McKinsey Global Institute, by 2030, up to 375 million workers worldwide may need to switch jobs or acquire new skills as a result of AI and other forms of automation. However, this report also notes that AI will create new jobs and industries, resulting in a net increase in the number of jobs available. The types of jobs that will be created will require new skills, and workers will need to adapt to these changes in order to remain employable.


Industries Most Likely to be Affected by AI

Some industries are more likely to be impacted by AI than others. For example, manufacturing, transportation, and retail are industries that have been using automation for many years, and the integration of AI will only increase the level of automation in these industries. Jobs that involve repetitive tasks or tasks that require low levels of creativity are most at risk of being automated.

On the other hand, industries that require high levels of creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence, such as healthcare, education, and social work, are less likely to be impacted by AI. While AI may be able to assist these industries in certain tasks, it is unlikely that it will be able to fully replace human workers.


New Jobs Created by AI

While it is true that AI has the potential to eliminate certain jobs, it also has the potential to create new jobs and industries that never existed before. For example, the rise of AI has led to the development of new job titles such as data scientist, machine learning engineer, and AI ethicist. These jobs require a high level of technical expertise and specialized skills, and they are in high demand.

In addition, the integration of AI into various industries will create new opportunities for workers to collaborate with AI and perform tasks that require a combination of human and machine intelligence. These hybrid jobs, also known as augmented jobs, will require workers to have a deep understanding of AI and the ability to work alongside machines to perform complex tasks.


Preparing for the Future of Work

As AI continues to evolve, it is important for workers to prepare for the future of work. This means acquiring new skills, staying up-to-date with technological advancements, and being adaptable to change. Workers who are able to adapt to these changes will be well-positioned to take advantage of the new job opportunities that will arise as a result of AI.

In addition, it is important for policymakers to implement policies that support workers who are impacted by AI. This may include retraining programs, financial assistance, and other forms of support to help workers transition to new jobs and industries.

Communication minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful The minister for communications and digitalization, Ursula Owusu, has stated that there will be no further extension of the deadline for sim card registration. She said this during a National Communications Authority forum in Kumasi.
