TESCON President arrested for claiming Regional Minister didn't bath before meeting president Akuffo Addo

Sayiby Afa Yaba, head of the Tertiary Students Confederacy of the NPP (TESCON) at Tamale Technical University, has reportedly been detained by police in the Northern Region because of remarks he made regarding the region's minister on social media.

The regional minister, Alhaji Saani Alhassan, did not take a bath before leading a delegation to welcome president Akuffo Addo during his visit to the area, the TESCON president allegedly claimed in a Facebook comment on the evening of Wednesday, July 10, 2022. This led to the president of the organization being detained, according to a report by Radio Tamale.

The president of the TTU Student Representative Council (SRC), Dauda Gafaru, confirmed the arrest in an interview with Radio Tamale the morning following the arrest.

"A squad of police officers arrested one of our colleagues while we were on campus. We mistook the introduction for a joke. Only to be handcuffed and taken to the police station," he claimed, according to Fuseini Safianu Dauda of Radio Tamale. Dauda also claimed that their colleague was arrested because of a comment he made about the minister on Facebook.

We were questioned if it was appropriate to speak about the minister in the same way that our colleague had written about him.

On Monday, August 8, 2022, at the Tamale Airport, a picture of the northern regional minister and the president went viral on social media.

Some social media critics thought the minister's outfit—a shirt, khaki pants, and sandals—was improper given the situation.

Sayiby Afa Yaba commented on the popular photo posted on Tamale Radio's Facebook page, saying, "I want to believe our Northern Regional Minister didn't bath before he came out."

Some New Patriotic Party followers in the Northern Region and students at Tamale Technical University are claimed to have been outraged by his arrest.

The minister has come under fire for allegedly pushing for the president of TESCON to be arrested.

In an interview with radio Tamale, the TTU SRC president claimed that the situation has been exaggerated.
